I agree with someone who said , whoever it was , was from the island and was so upsetting to Jack b/c it was a reminder that he shouldn't have got them off after all . Again that heaviness of the responsibility of being the cause of their misery and heartache or whatever went wrong when they returned .

well, let's put the clues together, it was a male, probably black, the paper said from New York, I think it was Michael, he was from New York, Kate didn't want to know about him because he left them. I think she also was living with James (a.k.a Sawyer)

Michael is from New York. That is one reason why I am guessing it was him. But also because he alienated his friends when he betrayed them and killed a couple of them. Many people keep saying that the coffin was very small. I am not sure of that, it did not look like a child's coffin to me.

Here is the transcript from the readable part of the newspaper clipping that is posted on Lostpedia.

The first sentence of the article Jack carries around in the flash-forward seems to read, "The body of Jo.. [unreadable] ..antham of New York was.. [unreadable] ..[shor]tly after 4 a.m. in the.. [unreadable] of Grand Avenue. Ted.. [unreadable] ..man at The Tower.. [unreadable] ..loud noises.. [unreadable].. loft. Co.. [unreadable] ..entered the.. [unreadable] ..a beam in the.. [unreadable] ..[ac]cordin[g].. [unreadable].."

They also reference an actual Grand Avenue Project in NY that is supposed to be completed in 2010, when the series concludes.

I thought Naomi got killed on the island? Do you think she came back to life? That is a good theory about the people dying once they are off the island. I bet Locke wouldn't even leave the island. He did walk away, maybe he left?

Could it have been Walt in the coffin? I kind of thought the coffin looked rather small to be that of an adult.

If they wanted us to know they would have showed more. I garentee that the new paper clipping is nothing, I don't think they would let the secret get out if they didn't want the audence knowing. That clipping could be for anyone.. they want to leave us hanging just like then did all of the seasons of Lost. Anyone could have moved to NY.. and Kate wouldn't be THAT upset at Michael that she wouldn't have attended his funeral, and someone would have gone.. he had family that would have gone, his son for starters. The only LOGICAL explanation is probaly Ben. Like I said before.. MAYBE Ben was wrong trying to save himself? Kate looked like she was okay. Jack is the only one we know for sure is depressed. Jack wants to be on the Island again, he thinks Ben was right, so he thought he should go to his funeral.

Yea I agree that it was Ben as well. The whole not friend/family gave it away. I mean even though Jack is not on the best of terms with Locke, Locke didn't shoot him after all b/c there is history there. Also Ben's whole life was on the island, so who would be at his funeral back in the real world.

Ok... New York? The car Jack is driving and the car that almost hits Jack when he crosses the street both have Cali plates.

Its a "local" paper so the person could have DIED in NY but lived in Cali.

From what I can tell most people believe Jack is in NY at the viewing?

Really? I wasn't certain that he was in NY. In fact I didn't think that at all and i live there.

Also looking at it again it was a "small" coffin... Ben of course is not a Jack sized man.

Im reading a lot of threads..... but there is 3 or 4 mentions of New York in this thread. Im just letting people know what I saw.

So they could have lived, been born or even just died in NY. But it appears the coffin is in Cali.
