I think its Ben:

Reasons:
Kate wouldnt attend because she doesnt like him.

Jack is getting upset becuase Ben was probably the only person who would know how to get back to the Island but now he is dead. So he doesnt know what to do now.

Also..... it could be Lock because the paper cutting said something about "hanging" as in suicide. Lock tried to shoot himself when he was in the pit and realised that he couldnt walk, but Walt said not to.

When he would have got rescued he probably lost use of his legs in the real world so ended up killing himself.

I doubt Locke has left the island, he feels he found his true purpose there and has no intention of leaving.

Same goes for Ben.

I think if it were any member of the losties, Kate would've gone because they all have been thru so much together.

i rekon all these theories are all good, but the most logical is someone we havent met yet. there is always at least one factor that rules out everyone we already know.

Is it just me or did it seem that jack was in this entirely alternate reality with the flashbaks (or flashforwards) of the last 2 episodes? How could he still have a script written by his father after coming back from the island? and he also said something like "go and get my father and if see if he is more drunk than i am". and the crash his ex wife-major-look-alike was in and how badly he wanted to do the surgery.

And do you get the feeling that only jack, kate and whoever is in the coffin, were/are the only ones that left the island? it seems jack wants to return to save everyone left - cos why would he try so hard to leave and then say - "we shouldnt have left, kate"

I just read all of the posts and am quite surprised no one posted this theory: (ok, maybe it's a bit illogical)
I think one of the Losties actually has turned bad and betrayed them all, although I have no idea who it is or what he/she is going to do. But they are all going to be so mad at him/her they don't want to go to the funeral.

But actually the whole thing doesn't make any sense to me. If the person in the coffin was really that unpopular, why would
1. Jack be so upset
2. Jack call Kate (by the way, are we sure he called Kate?) and say: "I just found out", because I had the impression he wanted to say "I'm sorry for your loss" to someone.
3. The person Jack called not call him back and ask what was going on?

It all seems so weird to me, but I don't think it was just a daydream, it appears just too stupid to make every Lost fan wreck his brain and than just let them know it wasn't for real.

Great point, because when jack meets kate at the end, she knows nothing about the death or mentions anything about him leaving a message. Who did he ring? maybe the only person who could help him get back to the island?

I vote a "yet unseen" person that will be introduced in the upcoming seasons. They have to make a way to introduce someone new in a better way than the Nikki/Paulo debacle!
