James Ford
James Ford, better known by the alias of "Sawyer", is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Sawyer's early life was ravaged by the con man who ultimately claimed both his parent's lives through conning them, instantly orphaning him. As a child, he wrote a letter to this con man, hoping to deliver it to him in person one day. Sawyer set out to search for him, presumably after he left school, however he, himself, ultimately became a con man and became the man he was hunting, became Sawyer. Revenge plays a big part in Sawyer's life, starting with the real Sawyer. On the island, Sawyer has often used his abilities to con people to get his wishes, and keeps a stash of useful items with him. However, after the death of the real Sawyer, he has begun to rethink his ways and is slowly turning into a leader for the survivors.
He escaped from the captivity of the Others with Kate, and has formed a relationship with her.

Is Karl privvy to information that Alex is not - Does Karl have a Dharma Library Card that he can go in and do some research in the File Room?

I would assume that would depend on whom Karl is related to...maybe Richard? Maybe Tom? Maybe that security guy who's leading the attack on the lostie camp?
I am assuming that Karl came to the island from the outside world.

I really wanted to see more of the reaction as Ben was losing his cool with his people. I can't wait to pick up there at the finale.

In the previous episode, Ben was warned by Mikhail that a female helicopter pilot was found by the Losties and that she also had means for communication and a crew some miles off the island. Another conversation Ben had with Richard afterwards made it clear that the tape recorder was missing- though that much was not given on-screen, I am assuming it would take less than 2 minutes for Ben to figure that Locke took it. Add last night's Jakob thing and his shooting of Locke, Ben had to but find a new way out since things have changed drastically in the last 48 hours.
Ben not only wants to keep his little island community but also his research, and not only those but also his power and authority on his 'people'. So it appears crucial that he takes action immediately and as extensively as possible- he's got no time to wait for Juliette's marking of the tents. Whatever Ben does is bound to look irrational anyways at this point, and I agree that it's mostly his fears behind his decisions, but I think he's well aware that he needs to 'score big' in the eyes of his people, if he wants to save it all, at this particular time; re-gain respect and authority while putting everything on track (the Losties, the fertility research etc). So that explains his erratic ways in this episode for me.
Looking at the history, close and far, irrational display of aggression and operations beyond territory have always helped failing leaders gain charisma and authority in the eyes of their people- especially when orchestrated in the name of the self-protection or some betterment of the other-side. Ben's story is not all different.. In fact it's like a dejavu..

Yeah, things haven't been going so well for Ben, of late. But it is interesting that Ben wants to keep his island community hidden, and Locke doesn't want to leave the island. "The Answers" even told us that Locke doesn't want any of the Losties to get rescued. Ben and Locke both want the island to stay secret.
