I like the idea the the flashlight actually powered Jacob up, like Sabathius said. It was wierd that the lantern crashed to the floor and set the place on fire, but when John ran outside no fire (like xcrunner said) but also Ben re-hung the lantern completely intact back up on the hook outside the shack, not broken. The Wizard of Oz was just smoke, fire plumes, holograms, and an amplified voice. Jacob's show seemed pretty close to the Oz's show.

That's a good point.
And it ties in with the episode's title, as well.

Sabatheius, awesome signature there.. and excellent idea., Ben is a first rate manipulator and him not wanting Locke totake the flashlight in sparked my interest, but I lost any ideas of it in the scene. Perfect, Jacob is being held hostage by ben, and perhaps that's what the (salt?)barrier surrounding Jacob's area is..

Here is my trouble with technology (which anytime I type that word I want to sing Kipp's song from "Napoleon Dynamite") Isn't anything that is created a kind of technology? oil lamp>candle>lantern>flashlight, do you know what I am saying. Would it have been better, more explicit, if Ben would have said, "Jacob doesn't like electricity" ? And I am sure it is just me, but do I remember when Locke said he didn't like technology?

Locke never said that he didn't like technology. He was mad at Ben and the Others for having all the modern conveniences on the island. Called them Cheaters. I was thinking that Jacob drew his power from the flashlight, came on here to post that theory but Sabathius beat me to it... days ago. Anyway, I watch Ghost Hunters and the theory is that ghosts draw energy from the air which makes cold spots. Which is similar here. Ben has some voodoo going on with Jacob, ring around his house, jars of blood, no power/electicity.

I think Jacob is paranoid about modern devices because he was in the hatch when there was a malfunction.
