Since Smokey is scanning thoughts - is smokey under Jacob's control or just an extension of himself? Is that how a trapped Jacob would maybe come to know about the Losties on the island?

Thank you. I found it funny how Ben looked absolutely devastated when he left the shack... he's never looked that way before. it looked like a man who believes his tightly woven web of lies are beginning to crumbe down around him.

I'm going with the idea that Smokey was a security system set up by Dharma, and Jacob is a powerful psychic who took it under his control, like a remote viewer. I'm thinking now that Jacob is the apparitions, Yemi, Jack's father, and Smokey is just another of those, but something mechanical, real. Not a nanobot, but something that had to do with that scene from the original Dharma video, with DeGroot and the magnet filaments suspended in midair with some metal nodes around it.

So Jacob is the aparitions - interesting.... Since we have never seen smokey mutate from smoke into a character, that might be a possibility. Smokey is smokey - Jacob is the visions.

So does this mean that Jacob had Smokey kill Mr. Eko or did Smokey do that on his own??

I think he may be heeding his masters call in some form or another. Perhaps Jacob didn't like the conversation with Eko, and left, Smokey took this as 'Kill that SOB". Jacob favored Locke from the start, so Smokey tries to bring him back to his place for beers. There are probably other examples if we look closer.
