Let's just say that the isalnd does have some strange healing power...and certain types of people cannot die. Richard hasn't aged a day. Mikial said he guessed the fence wasn't turned to a leathal dose and no one blinked an eye, but why would you have a fence like that that could NOT kill a regulat person. When Locke turned him over, he certainly looked dead, although Locke and the others were somewhat distracted.
If Locke has "seen into the island" and believes it to be beautiful, and heard Phantom Jacob, then maybe he, like Mikial cannot die. The island won't let him.
With that in mind, could Mrs. Klugh/ Bea be one of them?

yeah, I heard the about the kidney theory. Haven't really checked into it, but it sounds plausible. Not sure about Ben intentionally shooting in the void where his kidney was though. I guess that is just as likely as anything else we have seen. I don't think so though. I think Ben intended to leave him for dead.

I like the idea that Ben really wanted to see if the island would heal Locke after being shot...if Ben really wanted Locke dead, wouldn't he just shoot him in the head while Locke was lying in the pit bleeding? Seems like he's putting Locke and the island through a test...if Locke dies, that's one more thing out of Ben's way...if the island heals Locke, then Ben's pretty much screwed, and may resort to even more dirty tricks to re-establish his leadership position...

What if Locke were to die but comes to people who can see the 'dead' on the island. He may have a confrontation with Jack like the spoiler said, but Yemi had a little confrontation with Eko, wouldn't you agree?
I was totally shocked by Ben shooting Locke, but we should have seen it coming in the jeolous looks of Ben's bug eyes.
I'm really not sure if Locke lives, though I hope he does, he seems to important.
