Here's what I think... The island itself is light and dark, good and evil. Ben is evil and communicates with that side under the pretense that he is communicating with the good side, and Jacob. He has held up this con for many years, but there are chinks in his armor. Fate has played well with Jacob recently, and has bought him a plane load of people to help bring the light side back into power, but Ben, realizing this, is trying to stop it. the Others are good, and always have been, but have just been following the wrong guy.
Jacob called out for help because perhaps he can only do good by having a relationship with someone who follows the light. Maybe the good guys are like jedi's and can see spirits who can guide them.. so what happened to Ben along the way, did his father turn him that evil?

I didn't think anyone noticed the Richard not aging thing but I wonder if the Lost writers realize this, like if they planned him looking about the same age b/c theres a secret there or if they just didn't bother. AHh i want answers!

i watched the episode again today and it puzzled me how richard had not aged.
i wonder if the real others richard etc got to the island on the Black rock ?
that would make them pretty old indeed

Well, Black & White are a definate motif of the show, and can be interpretted as Good & Evil, or Light & Dark. Each needs the other - you cannot define good (or white or light) without having evil (or black or dark) - otherwise you must define it as something else. Ben insists that he is "one of the good guys" which means he believes there are BAD guys, but if he and Richard Alpert wiped out the bad guys (the Dharma Initiative people) who is Ben speaking of now?

What if it's not the same character? Obviously it's the same actor. But suppose that it's a father/son kind of thing?

Or perhaps it like you all say, and the hostiles are immortal and forever young.

Here's something else I found interesting - consider the style of clothes that Richard was wearing when little Ben happened upon him. Look familiar? I thought so... they looked like the style of clothes that Tom and Bea Klugh and Others were wearing at the little hut village by the Pala Ferry, where Michael saw Walt again - the disguises. Why would the Others adopt disguises, the style of disguises that were from Richard? Also - did anyone else notice that at little Ben and Richard's meeting Richard actually says Ben's name, and Ben hadn't told Richard his name. How did Richard know that information?

I didn't notice that Ben hadn't told him his name, but now that you mention it.. yeah.
It's the "hostiles" I want to know so much more about. When I saw Jacobs outfit I thought it was the same that Richard was wearing with little ben. Ahhh so much pondering!

I totally missed that... Great Catch!!!

I just read the Official transcript and I was wrong - Richard asked him his name and Ben said, well, "Ben."

But the other stuff - the stuff about the clothes - I still wonder about that!

We really need to know more about the thirty years of Ben waiting patiently to answer that. i have a feeling ben became sort of a mythical figure to the Hostiles, perhaps it went both ways, for a while
