So...is Jacob actually Ben's version of the smoke monster?

Or is he, perhaps, the "spirit" or "soul" of the island?

I really don't know what to think. Locke has seen smokey before, so if Jacob = smokey then wouldn't Locke have seen something? Weird.....

I believe he is Ben's version of the smoke monster. I don't think the island is that mysterious with some ghost there.

Jacob = Creepy invisible spirit ,who hates technology,visitors, and apparently like everyone else, wants help! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

The Ben/Jacob relationship reminds me of the Samson/Management relationship in Carnivale.

I keep reading that the producers claim this show is not sci fi and there is a reasonable explanation for everything. I want to hear the scientific explanation for an invisible man.

I had the feeling that the man Ben met when he escaped the compound was Jacob. Maybe things happened over the years that turned this man into something else.

it was definitely the same actor, so I assume it was Richard.

as for Jacob, the are certainly making it seem like he's a ghost...that circle of "dirt" that was around Jacob's cabin is a typical device used in supernatural shows as a way to keep spirits trapped within the circle. They normally use salt or something like that...anyone watch the show "Supernatural" - they do this all the time.

I am thinking that Jacob is alive and somehow being "tormented" by Ben maybe- like they are his ghosts. Don't voodoo things use the circle to keep the ghosts / spirits outside of the circle away from them?

btw, I freeze framed this morning to get a good look at that profile of Jacob and he looks rather Jesus like. Maybe just the longish hair did it? Can anyone else tell?

The pregnant women die because Ben's mother died from her pregnancy?

I think Ben has imprisoned Jacob. When Locke was investigating the circle of sand (?) Ben stopped him. I don't think Jacob is Ben's personal smoke monster but I think Jacob controls the smoke monster. It is his out of body apparition thingy. He certainly is capable of violent outbursts, enough to say kill a pilot and chase Juliet and Kate through the jungle. And has wierd mind powers, he created fire and broke windows! What I thought was interesting was how Ben was shaking at the suggestion that Locke get to meet Jacob. Nervous what would happen between Locke and Jacob? Did he realize this is his chance to kill Locke? Or is he just plain scared of Jacob? Once he gets to Jacob's hut he didn't seem afraid of him. I think he has Jacob restrained somehow. Also very interesting is that Ben was told to kill his father (I assume) and Locke was asked to kill his father. Maybe smokey brought Cooper to the island. And it was a test for Locke by Jacob. But Locke couldn't kill his father and Ben had no problem with it. Ben=Bad Locke=Good
