Here's a thought on (part of) what Ben's up to.... he set everything up to get back at Juliette for trying to kill him (using Jack). I was no accident that Tom told Locke to go to Ben's tent when he did. And it was no accident that Ben was listening to the tape as Locke walked up. Even showed Locke where he could find it. Then told him their plans BEFORE the "initiation ceremony".

What if making a fool of him in front of everyone was part of his test.. That way no one feels like they are more important than they are.. Sort of an initiation.. They being able to convince someone else to kill someone or conning them to do so was another part of the test..

Ah thus putting Juliet in further jeopardy... I am still suspicious of that thing with Juliet, did she really want 'a change' and for Jack to kill Ben? Or is that part of Ben's plan. I tend to think everything every single one of those Others do is all part of a huge grand Ben plan. Having Juliet 'want' to do away with Ben would make Jack see her as an ally and he would accept without question that Ben and the Others left her behind. And then they have an inside person to spy on pregnant women since Ethan couldn't get it done. But then there's the whole sub thing.
Why else tell Locke his plan...maybe to see if Locke is still loyal to the Losties? Although he seems to know what Locke is going to do before Locke does.
And Richard Alpert giving John Sawyer's file... totally part of Ben's plan somehow, I think Richard is his most trusted Other. Ben wants Locke for some reason, but can't just make it that easy, makes him kill his dad, can't do it, has Richard tell him how to cheat, now Locke can follow the trail they left... I need a nap now.

I think Ben is afraid that Locke may supplant him as leader. That was why he gave him the task to kill his father (knowing that being a murderer would somehow compromise Locke's affinity with the island).

As for the man who gave Locke the folder, I think a lot of the Others don't like Ben's leadership...or, at least, a small faction doesn't. The guy said that some of them thought that Ben should forget the fertility issue and concentrate more on the original, core goals which brought them to the island. (I can't remember the exact wording).

I think Ben kept Locke close to him (until he could walk again) and then, like Locke's dad after he got Locke's kidney, he didn't need Locke anymore and probably views him as a potential threat to his leadership. That little lecture on gamesmanship in The Man From Tallehassee (where he told Locke that his leadership has always been a little shakey) could figure into this, as well--showing the group that Locke doesn't have what it takes should push-come-to-shove. Sort of: "See? He can't be ruthless, and meet out justice like I can."

I believe that Ben will be thrown for a loop when it comes out that Locke didn't bring his dad to the island - it was Sawyer who brought Anthony Cooper (Tom Sawyer) to the island.

I get it. You mean Ben opened Sawyer's magic box...not Locke's magic box.

I think you're right. Locke's wish was to beat his handicap (paralysis) through participating in the Walkabout. The island already gave him his magic box wish, right at the start!

Ben needs to be aware of everything going on in the Lostie's camp. The Others have attempted to infiltrate the Losties for three seasons and it hasn't really worked for them. I think Ben is now trying to get a Lostie in his camp. He tried with Jack, but IMO, even though he's been acting strange this season, Jack still has no love for the Others. So now he's taking a stab at Locke.

What did you all think about Ben's "pep talk" to John about how Cooper deserves to be killed? I don't remember the exact words, but it was somthing like "I know you're hesitating because your thinking he had good reasons to do such horrible things." or sumat like that.

My first reaction was, hey Ben, can't I say the same thing about you? Why don't I just kill you instead? Hmmm? That's just me though. I really can't stand how manipulative he is and how much ALL of them allow themselves to be manipulated like that.

Makes good TV though. But just once, I want someone to "defeat" Ben's manipulation. Just once... Both Jack and John seemed so promising, but maybe they will still suprise me?
