I guess that means Walt and Michael didn't make it back.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Widmore, Paik, 'Jacob', etc all conspired to get these people on the same plane and 'crash' them on the island, as everyone above seems to believe is possible. It would give the Others many more guinea pigs to test with, at the very least.

But that makes me wonder how they actually got the plane to crash. Wasn't it Desmond's doing when he refused to push the button after killing Kelvin? I doubt Des is involved with the conspiracy at all. And didn't the Others seem surprised when the plane crashed and Ben sent the two guys in as spies? If it were all planned in advance, wouldn't Ben know about it? Maybe not, but I still don't understand how they could've gotten the plane to crash without using Des . . . unless that wasn't what brought the plane down?!?

Remember all the speculation when Lost first started that all of them were dead and in some sort of Purgatory (ala The Sixth Sense and Vanilla Sky)?

I hope the writers don't pursue that plot idea and come up with something a little more imaginative.

Ben wasn't suprised about the crash, we saw that last week, how quickly he reponded to a new emergency.
I was waiting though to hear how long ago Naomi thoght the lane crash was. I be it's longer than 90 days by her accout, but it's just a theory.
If Patchy didn't survive and this is a twin, it's an exciting twist, but I really don't think the plot is the same as the sixth sense, I see it more of a plane being planted in the ocean that looked like 815 to throw off investigators. The losties are alive, but it seems the Others are confident (as are those who set it up of the isand) that the losties will never make it back to 'civilization'...

Did the Others see a faked crash?

Ok the plane did crash and not for a reason. It was a tragic accident. Some how before the sky turned purple and all communications went to hell, the Others somehow munipulated the media on the outside world and staged a fake crash and had reports of no survivors. This simply means that whoever is behind this wants these people here for research and has a @#$% load of money. OR Naomi is lying her butt off and is some new type of bad guy. Who knows????

I thought they debunked the pergatory thing a long time ago. I hope so, because it's not very interesting considering where the whole show has been going. There should have been more "morality tests," so to speak, if that was where they were going with the show.

This episode brings an interesting twist to the concept of "dying" on the island. Obviously people die, all those pregnant ladies, but what is really going on with all the daddies coming back, etc.

Well here goes:

Possibility 1 -- Naomi is lying. I like it, I don't think she was sent by Penny anyway. But the problem I do have is that she has a fairly traumatic injury and she still has the fortitude and awareness to continue on with her ruse? That seems a little questionable, but not impossible. I mean if she is some sort of spy/secret agent/commando or something maybe she was trained to perform under extreme stress and near death.

Posibility 2 -- Naomi is telling the truth. Now her exact words are:

Flight 815? They found the plane. There were no survivors. They were all dead.

Is it possible, however unlikely, that debris from the plane floated around in the ocean and washed up on some distant shore or into shipping lanes and was found. Through serial numbers the debris was able to be identified as a part of Flight 815. And enough pieces or critical components were found that it was assumed the plane went down in ocean and so no possibility of survivors.

either way is open to criticism, but oh well.........

Fake plane crash conspiracy sounds rather weak- Ben or Jacob might well be involved with the circulation of misinformation in the outside world, and Naomi's comment might be an example of that..

Producers have dismissed the purgatory explanation long time ago- one of the earliest and most common conspiracies actually..perhaps this week's crazy ending has more to do with some time-twist- or 'temporality working differently on the island' kind of thing (wounds getting well sooner than they normally would, likely to be an indicator of that) In their weekly podcasts, Producers have always found subtle ways to suggest that time could be working different with/on the island (you might want to check out the Podcast listing and descriptions on Lostpedia.org for details. most are still on.)

But if that's the case, how come was Ben able to make a live connection and show Juliette a newspaper's date before showing the sister?

I'm with Hermann on this one - we know from the Lost Experience that Widmore, Paik , and Mittelwerk haved done business before. (Paik Heavy Industries built the medical ship for the Worldwide Wellness Prevention Development Program for the Hanso Foundation, under T. Mittelwerk, who, through shady dealings took over Alvar Hanso's seat on the Widmore board of directors). These three powerful men definately have the international reach , endless capital and the questionable characters (Thomas Mittelwerk basically took Alvar Hanso hostage and then took over the Hanso Foundation and the Widmore Board of Director's chair. From what Sun said last night to Jin's mom - you know what my family is capable of thing, and whatever Mr. Paik was making Jin do) to accomplish anything.
AND
Maybe the plane was not supposed to crash, maybe it was supposed to make some sort of landing on the beach - rough, but survivable. Or maybe there's an airstrip somewhere - what were Kate and James working on - building another runway? But perhaps there was an unfortunate accident and unforeseen event - Desmond didn't push the button - and the plane did crash. (Did anyone else think it was weird that there were pregnancy tests, Widmore pregnancy tests, on board a commercial airliner, flight 815? Is that a standard item on flights like Jack's little liquor bottles? I wouldn't think that was something someone would just carry with them either - you suspect your pregnant, you buy a test, you use it, then toss it.)
