Sacrifice

I thought that the theme of sacrifice was very compelling this week. I like seeing Desmond from this spiritual angle, with visions and callings, which makes his character so much more complex. It is clear that Penny is the most important thing in the world to Desmond and he was contemplating sacrificing Charlie's life in order to find her. But Desmond's good nature stepped in the way and reversed the sacrifice. Even though it was not Penny, Desmond was willing to sacrifice saving her in order to save Charlie, which shows that he actually would have made a great monk.

I noticed also a lot of attention on the Isac and Abraham story from the bible and Desmond's concentration on how its all a test. He had to be willing to kill his own son in order to prove himself. I think this almost foreshadow's Charlie's fate. I feel like Desmond is going to have to either let the events fall into place without interfering or he is going to have to sacrifice his own life and die in the same manner Charlie is supposed to in order to cancel it out. Those are just some of my thoughts, what do you guys think?

I would rather lose Charlie than Desmond. It is an interesting idea though and could be very likely to happen.

I was thinking on the same lines... I was thinking more the fact that Charlie takes the place of Penny.. Desmond can't have both saving Charlie and being with Penny again..

In his flashes last night it had Charlie dying and Penny being the one in the tree...
In flashes before your eyes, when Des is figuring out that everything is happening again he takes off his tie and throws it on the ground.. Then he said Penny asked me why I did that.. But then he see's Charlie and there is no Penny there...

I guess I find it odd how when Charlie is involved Penny isn't...
That and at some point Charlie and Penny both lived in London.. I think Charlie grew up there and Penny's dad's corporation is also in London!

Yea it sorta makes sense the whole "See you in another life brother" thing. Its like Penny was his calling before and now he's understanding that Charlie is his calling in this life.

I was thinking more along the lines that if Desmond wants to save Charlie he is going to have to sacrifice being with Penny again.. Or vice versa Having Penny again he is going to have to let Charlie die!

If that is the test (to be like Abraham and allow Charlie to die because that's what the vision said) I would hate to be in Desmond's shoes.

In my eyes, having the foreknowledge and allowing someone to die would be the same as killing them yourself.

If the test is to be willing to kill (allow the vision to play out without altering it) then I think I wouldn't pass.

I'm just not built that way.

I agree with you there Charlie.. Maybe that is where the Title for the episode comes from...
Catch22 no matter what you can't save them both or have things go both ways for you!

But the problem with this episode is, and that's why I think it's just a coincidence of saving Charlie/seeing Penny, Desmond had a vision of something he had to put together.
Claire is drowning on her own accord, she takes a swim, the lightining strikes on it's own. But this time, Desmond puts together the little Camping trip.. why? He had a vision, but if he never gathered everyone, then there wouldn't have been trouble.
I know he needed everyone, Hurley the wire, Jin for... that scary story (real funny by the way) and Charlie to take the arrow that may have hit Des if he were alone? and all of them to catch the girl as he chopped her down. BUT, it's still odd that it's a flash of something that is totally avoidable.... make any snse?
