Kate Austen
Kate Austen is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Kate is a fugitive, and was being pursued by Marshal Mars prior to the flight, for blowing up her father. Kate had been captured in Australia and was being escorted back to the United States before the crash. Kate has always seemed to run away from her past. Even on the Island, Kate exhibits a kind of evasive behavior to escape from her problems. Kate, when on the run, always had good intentions and never did any outright harm or killings to anybody, she believed she was doing things for the greater benefit of others. This view is prominently connected with her actions of her father's murder - she believed she was relieving her mother from his abusive presence. Kate is strong-willed, useful and clever, but dislikes being alone and is usually level-headed.
She has escaped from the captivity of the Others with Sawyer, and has formed an ambiguous romantic relationship with him, despite still being unsure about her feelings for Jack.

She said," I can fix this Jack" Hmmmm....

I took it that Juliet said she could fix the problem with Claire, because she had caused it to some degree with her serum injections. Kind of like, I broke it, so I know how to fix it. I think Jacob did fix Ben....by sending him a spinal surgeon...special delivery. Interesting thought about them possibly being brothers. It seems as though Jacob cannot come to the island and Ben cannot leave it....but they work together to make things happen.

So was the pilot told to crash it, and before he could spill the secret, the monster ate him?

I think that possibly the pilot was paid to take the plane off course and fly in the vicinity of the island. He did not know there was going to be a crash. However, I think that Jacob knew the exact time of the hatch incident in which Desmond did not enter the numbers immediately. (just as the old lady knew Des was destined to turn the key at some point) He knew that the electro magnetic incident would pull that plane down.
That is why the pilot told them, "they will be looking for us in the wrong place" because they were completely off course (1000 miles off!). I always wondered how they got that far off course. But now I believe it was intentional. Then the pilot was conveniently killed before he could spill anymore beans.

I think Jacob is more likely to be Ben's father. Reason being that in the Old Testament, Jacob (later known as Israel or "struggled with God") had many sons, one of whom was named Benjamin. Interestingly, Benjamin's mother, Rachael, died giving birth to him.

Funnily enough, Benjamin means "son of my right hand."

Lucky thing that the spinal surgeon didn't happen to get killed in the crash, eh?
