Benjamin "Ben" Linus
Benjamin "Ben" Linus is the leader of the Others on the Island. Ben arrived on the Island as a child, brought by his father Roger to work for the DHARMA Initiative. Ben takes orders from Jacob, and is the only person who visits and speaks with him. Ben's apparent goal is to keep the Island and its special properties secret from the outside world, and he goes to great lengths to achieve this.

Smokey and Sonic Fence
There has been some chatter in other threads about this and I thought it deserved its own thread.
Ok the big question:
Why couldn't it just go over the fence like K/S/L/ and Danielle did?
The best reason I could come up with was that the effects of the fence extend above it. But for this to be true then it would mean that the fence was off when K/S/L/D climbed over. But wait if the fence was off then what about Patchy, I mean with blood spewing out of his ears and the noise the fence made it sure looked like it was on to me.
So now I am just going in circles trying to answer the question.
any ideas?

that makes sense, but also seems kinda lame.
I would hope the writers could do better than that.

Ok. But if it is a bubble how did Kate climb over it before?
Did someone turn it off after Pacthy was pushed through?
Things just don't add up or they get really complicated. But I guess no more complicated than anything else so far.

I think the Others know far more than they would ever tell (because then they would have to kill us, right Juliet?). I've heard the term "badder than we think they are" used to describe them. PLUS if Ben's lived there his whole life he surely knows quite abit about the happenings on creepy island. And there are moniters EVERYWHERE!!! I thought Ben's little station was the only one monitering the "bear" (or is that bare) activity at the hydra and Jack was the only one who saw Sawyer and Kate, but apparently lots of Others had seen it, or at least talked about it, so are there more moniters?
Was the fence off last night until Juliet pushed in the code? So the Ben-Others turned it off to move to where ever they are moving to and didn't want to waste electricity by turning it on to guard only Jack and Sayid? Maybe the Flame station was important to the operation of the fence, and now that Mikhail's dead and Flame's blown up, there's trouble with the fence. Or maybe the fence was never on and Mikhail bit down on the cyanide capsule embedded in his tooth (remnant of the cold war) to kill himself. It's probably more logical to think that it is a perimeter fence, but in order to keep smokey out I want it to be a bubble.

I agree with your reasoning, but if this is the answer then I think that it is really lame. smokey could just do the same thing.
I actually hope that it was off when they climbed over.
