I think more importantly, they are eluding to the fact that every time we see Smokey we hear unwinding and winding chains, metallic grinding, etc... it must be somehow tethered to the ground, perhaps it can only get so far from it's cerberus vents, like a chained dog.

Thanks BabyYo! Do you see where it's going... if Smokey is tethered then it might not be able to get completely over the fence, or completely separate itself from the ground to go over the fence. Therefore, like caged animals, it could only go back and forth looking for a way through!

I agree that this is the logic they are using to explain the fence stopping it. But I still think it is lame.

It reached up to snatch the Pilot out of the plane in the first episode.

We saw it grab Eko up and lift him high in the air.

After seeing events like these I would think that it would be entirely possible for it to reach over the fence and grab Juliet.

It probably should be able to reach over the fence (like the smoke tenticle that grabbed Eko and Locke), but maybe like the water tenticle in The Abyss, it has to be connected. (Listen, personally, I'm with you! I said,"why can't it get over the fence; that's dumb.") But if that's what the Lost show is going to give us I guess I better come up with a reason why, or at least try an assuage my "that's dumb" argument the best I can. And why? Because I just can't stay mad at Lost, I love it!

I know it has been said before but the only way I can think that it could not go over the fence is if smokey is tethered under the island or something to that effect only has a certin range and the fence was built at that line... Smokey could not cross over the top because "his leash" didn't reach far enough..

Just some thoughts I know I read by someone else about the tether

Or that Smokey is just something else entirely that is not connected to the others, dharma or anything else. It may really just be connected with the island and be beyond our understanding. But i like explanations! lol
