Why send Ethan and Goodwin to make lists? If Smokey could go scan losties and gather info. Or take the form of a person and infiltrate the losties.

When the others decide who they want to take, why not just send Smokey to pick them up and fly them back to the others?

So far the fence appears to be smokeys only weakness (well the dynomite seemed to scare it off too).

If the others control smokey, then I don't understand their methods for using it.

This is a CL idea. So Smokey can extend up but some part of it needs to be in contact with the ground. Like a cobra rising up and getting ready to strike? Well then if the fence doesn't extend up like a dome why couldn't smokey just reach over the fence and snatch up Juliet and Kate?

*I, too, too, have wondered about the Others going themselves to scout the losties - why get your hands dirty. You should stay at home and 1) get Juliet's house plumbing finally fixed 2) concentrate more on the books in the book club 3) try to set the high score on the videos in the game room. We know Smokey can grab ahold of a person ala Locke, Eko, the Pilot or at least scan them - we promise we won't shock you with the fence if your a good dog and fetch us what we command.
I think the other Others, not the Ben-Others control Cerberus, ergo the need for the fence.

Think of the fence as if it were a giant barbed wire fence instead of sonic pulses.

The gang pushed the tree over against the fence and climbed on the tree. They never touched any part of the fence. When the smoke monster got to it there was no way to get over it without actually climbing the fence itself.

I had two big questions about this episode, but I think I've figured them out...

My first question was why Julliet contradicted herself so obviously. When the smoke monster first appeared she acted confused and scared, but later she knew that it couldn't go over the fence and was even confident enough to enter the code and then just stand there and watch it charge her. I think she probably never had seen the smoke monster first hand before but knew of it's existance. When it flashed at her I think it was checking her out because it hadn't seen her before and didn't know who she was.

My other question was how she could be so sure that fence was off when the came to it. I think that the fence was made to keep the smoke monster out of the village. She knew that if the smoke monster was in the village area with them that the fence must have been left off when all her buddies took off. That's how she knew that fence was off.

I THINK THIS MEANS THAT THE OTHERS DON'T CONTROL THE SMOKE MONSTER.

If you can control it why would you have a fence around yourself to keep it out? Up until the plane crash Russo and Desmond were the only other people on "the island that no one could ever find", so it seems like a pretty elaborate security system if you factor out the smoke monster.

Maybe the smoke monster used to be controlled by the Hanso Foundation, but like everything else on the island it is unmanned and on autopilot.

Although I think Juliette is really ostricized by Others for good (remember she killed one of them), it's possible that she's playing her part in Ben's game, trying to make Kate and Jack think she's left behind while her intention is to go spy on Losties by the beach. Perhaps, Locke and Ben's conversation by the Black Box lead to sharing of precious information off-screen and Ben thought it necessary to get Juliette spy on Losties' camp. If that's the case, I'm thinking, EITHER that Others went underground into another hatch or left the terrains secured by the fence and either way, had to have the fence turned off and Juliette knowing that, had to activate it after encountering Smokey---
OR, It was never off anyways, but the side with the control panel was off the circuit (otherwise kind of difficult to approach and alter it once it's been set)
Yeah, the security fence must allow for a bubble-like protection that Smokey can't do much about.

You are all a bunch of nuts and i love it.

Smoke comes from underground. everytime he make and appearence. we can hear chains clanking and machine room type sounds as it nears... then explsions and it pops out of the ground. So we know it lives underground and or is stored there.

We have only seen it near the ground and never in any open space OR at the beach. Therefore it must stay in the shade/tree cover and close to the ground. Yes maybe its powersource is located in a huge facility underground. and it can only go where the facility extends benieth...

But we still havent scene it physically shape shift into something in live realtime shots. we ( i mean all of you ) still assume that happens. Just like how you all assume it can fly about and go every which way and play mp3s and such

i see the Smokey like a mean dog that has the brain of an ADD baby. whoever came up with the Cujo reference is also a great thought. Becuase much like Cujo and rabies... Smokey could have malfunctioned somehow and is now rogue. A Rogue, simpleton dog. it investigates and either attcks or just runs away depending on smell...

well.... if smokey is not taking the form of people is it safe to assume that what ever is Yemi, Kate's horse, Christian, etc.. is at least working with smokey or perhaps smokey's master.

So you are saying that Smokey is some kind of shape shifter? That it takes the form of what one desires or fears most?

who knows. I think a lot of people have thought that smokey might be responsible for the appearance of dead people and animals from losties past. Just a theory that it may be one of smokey's abilities.
