Guys guys guys!! The fence was off when Kate and Juliet reached it because when the others put thier gas masks on and bolted they turned the fence off to get out. They must of never turned it back on

A lack of intelligence would explain a lot.....
But what about its ability to take the form of people and con some of the losties. I guess this is not a proven ability of smokey, but several of us have thought that it was Yemi and Jack's dad and Kate's horse and so on. So it is either not that smart and these visions of people are not smokey or they are smokey and in at least the case of pretending to be Yemi it has to have a fairly high level of intelligence IMO.

Based on what I have seen so far I am going with this:

1. Smokey is intelligent or controled by someone who is intelligent.
2. The fence puts up a barrier like a dome.
3. The fence was on when Patchy was pushed into it.
4. Someone turned the fence off. Allowing the losties to climb over it.

I am open to an alternative solution, but I don't see one yet.

Everything I've read so far is going on the assumption that Juliette was telling the truth, that they don't know much about Smokey other than the fact it dislikes the fence. What if the Others control Smokey? It seemed to show up every time the two of them started to fight. The thing can put a man in a tree and toss Eko around like a rag doll but, it can pass over a fence? It seemed like a show to me. If that's the case this whole thing could just be a con, to get the Losties to trust Juliette enough to take her in. Juliette stops Smokey from killing Katie (as far as Kate is concerned.) Jack trusts her because she was left behind. She will be on the beach next week. I think the Others sent Smokey out, and pulled him back when the job of freeking Kate out was done. I could be wrong but, it's the only reason I can think of that Smokey would not just hop the fence.

I like your thoughts also Dragonfly. My thoughts the whole time was that Juliette has not been left behind. Also notice that it started to rain again before Smokey showed up? My biggest concern about it all is that Patchy ran right through the fence but when Smokey tried it was like a force field, that tells me the fence was not on when Patchy ran through it or there is a different kind of security for some, such as an implanted device that once it goes past a point it detonates. So the fence could be on but not on the "force field" Don't know guys I am not that sci-fi but that is my only explanation. Thoughts?

If you put a magnet under cardboard and a piece of metal on top, you can push the metal around by moving the magnet underneath. Maybe Smokey needs to be in touch with someting underground, in the vents, to be effective.

I agree there is something that is controling "Smokey" I just am not sure what it is..

Are you thinking that Smokey could not go pass the fence because of something that is underground not the fence?
