James Ford

James Ford, better known by the alias of "Sawyer", is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Sawyer's early life was ravaged by the con man who ultimately claimed both his parent's lives through conning them, instantly orphaning him. As a child, he wrote a letter to this con man, hoping to deliver it to him in person one day. Sawyer set out to search for him, presumably after he left school, however he, himself, ultimately became a con man and became the man he was hunting, became Sawyer. Revenge plays a big part in Sawyer's life, starting with the real Sawyer. On the island, Sawyer has often used his abilities to con people to get his wishes, and keeps a stash of useful items with him. However, after the death of the real Sawyer, he has begun to rethink his ways and is slowly turning into a leader for the survivors.

He escaped from the captivity of the Others with Kate, and has formed a relationship with her.

Default Theme of Betrayal

I think there were so many great connections to betrayal in this episode. We start off with Locke leaving Kate behind, which is a form of betrayal. His selfish intentions leave Kate in a very dangerous position. Then we see Cassidy (Sawyer's ex) a victim of his own betrayal of her meet up with Kate. I never really noticed any similarities in these women until this episode. Sawyer really does seem like he has fallen for a lot of the qualities in Kate that he also saw in Cassidy. It was really interesting to see these connections. Then we have betrayal with Kate's mom. What really got me is that Kate was like I did it for you and she said no you did it for yourself. Betrayal by blood ties has to be the worst, followed by betrayal of the one you love, which is what Cassidy experienced with Sawyer. We also see betrayal with Juliet, as she is left behind with Kate.

I thought this scene also paralled the hallway scene with Kate and Jack. Jack didn't say it but it sure looked to me that he felt the same way as Kate's mom.

Oh yea I knew there was one I forgot. Thanks for bringing that up! Definetely Kate's betrayal of Jack revealed and yes that is a great point, it is almost like a role reversal. Suddenly Jack was the one feeling betrayed and Kate felt all this guilt overwhelming her. I also thought it was interesting how Cassidy said she wouldn't turn Sawyer in, which shows how much she really loved Sawyer. Despite his betrayal of her, she would not turn around and do the same to him.

It's the second time Kate's screwed up with Jack. The first time was when the guys L/S/J were all going to find Walt, and Jack told Kate to stay at camp, and she didn't.... and they ended up with the whole Tom "this is our island" thing going on that cost the losties some of their guns and ammo.

btw - when Kate asked Cassidy "what's his name" at the end of the show.....ARGH!!!!! Cassidy couldn't have thrown "Sawyer" out there with the rest of her little speech?

of course not. gotta save that juicy bit of knowledge for after Kate falls completely for Sawyer then she finds out that Cassidy's man is Sawyer and she gets heart broken for falling for a "bad" guy

But wait, if Sawyer ended up in prison and Cassidy had a picture of Clementine, didn't that mean she turned him in? She wasn't even visibly pregnant when helping Kate.

I guess Cassidy decided to turn Sawyer in after her conversation with Kate. During Sawyer's FB where Cassidy visited him in prison and showed him Clementine's picture it seemed that they both acknowledged that she was responsible for him being in prison.
That's what I thought anyway.

Yeah, she eventually turned him in, that was their discussion at the visit. then he gave her his reward from conning the thief. I thought that was Sawyer's turning point, showing he was a good man, that he could forgive, even though it was his fault in the first place.
