Juliet had the keys to the handcuffs. After the monster is repelled by the sonic fence, she admits to Kate that she, and not the Others, was responsible for the two of them being handcuffed and "stranded" out in the jungle.

I think that Ben isn't the only one who likes to play convoluted mind games.

Oh yea definetely Juliette is all about the mind games. She's very intelligent and she has even outsmarted Ben behind his back as well.

and yeah I think her and the others must know something about Smokey or at the very least they know it exists. Aside from obivous benefits the others choice to live behind the sonic fence seems to point directly to the fact that they knew about smokey

Interesting stuff about the MRI and scanning. The flashes of white light on Juliet were almost like flashbulbs going off (I know you don't use flashbulbs with MRI"S) as in taking pictures or scans. Juliet did not look directly at the white light, it almost seemed painful for her each time the light flashed. So if it is magnetic, does sonic "noise" interfere with that, scientifically I mean?

The Ben-Others are aware of the Smoke monster, Juliet stated as much in the show when she said "we know very little about it." That shows that they know of it, but, like us, don't understand it... except that someone understands it scientifically enough to build that weird sonic fence (and distribute the pass code) to keep it out. Kind of like the swan station where someone knew enough to encase the "incident" in concrete (like Chernobyl, stated Sayid) and construct a countdown clock mechanism and a fail safe with key. Somebody knows more than they're saying.
Juliet's whole little act seemed very reminiscient of Ben's capture, but unlike Ben who never broke, Juliet blew it with the handcuff key and the sonic fence. Where there whispers during this epi? Does anyone know?

QUEEN, once again asking the proper questions. Smokey and whispers are seperate, we can assume. Juliette caves when smokey is coming, and uses the key, SOOO, she is afraid of smokey, like a rabid dog, you know the dog, but aren't sure of it's intentions, so she hides behind the fence. I use an electric fence for my Rottie, because she likes kids, but not ones that come poking around, if you know what I mean.
I guess I have to believe that the Others don't really know what smokey is, and my theory has to be reworked. but not by that much. Smokey does have a mind, but now I think it may have a mind of it's own.

Thanks Cable! My point about the whispers is I think they tie into monitering (remote viewing?), so with the switching of the fence off and on, if there were whispers maybe someone moniters the fence (if you believe the fence was switched off and on).

Smokey like pretty much all robots in futuristic movies - start out as good-intentioned inventions and then gain too much knowledge, develop intelligence, and decide to kill all humans. Smokey was probably originally a benevolent (maybe even misunderstood *sniff*) monster, but then there was an "incident" and now Smokey runs amok!!!!

right, so was the fence designed to keep smokey in or out. I guess we can call him Cujo now. (more King)

Maybe Juliet knew of Smokey through what the Others knew, but had never seen it in person. That would explain why she was scared, but later able to deter it with the fence.

The Others know much more then they let on. Juliet was married or involved intimately with Ben (what's the relationship with Juliet's sister?). I would think that big, scary, protection system gone haywire is inner circle kinds of stuff with married couples who live on and run the very island said protection system is located.
