I understand this is the name of the spider... Was this one of the previously unknown species? IF it was did he name it & how did he know so much about the affects of the spider venom & the fact of the female putting out all the faremones to attract all the males?

I just took it as he was collecting all kinds and discovered some new ones. The medusa spider would have to be an already known one with all the information he knew about it. IMO

His claims might also have been his geeky way of flirting with Nikki, cause there are billions of insects and for him to claim with any certainty that he found new ones without a data base to check against is kinda far fetched.
More than anything else it is just a scientist doing scientist things and a way for Nikki to learn about a spider she can use to manipulate poor Paulo
