They are dead and were just a filler show for season 3.

When the episode ended, their bodies were only barely covered and wasn't it getting dark?

I would think that since Paolo should have revived by now if he were still alive, but had not, and Nikki's eyes flashed open, that he was dead and she would dig her way out while everyone was asleep. And recover the diamonds.

Do you know how hard it is to dig yourself out of all that sand when you are just recovering your senses after being paralyzed. I will be shocked if Nikki or Paolo can actually dig themselves out, someone else Vincent, or someone else would need to dig them out.

Pikki were only there for unanswered questions. But pretty pointless episode. Also the "pen" thing was like...yeah...I also don't think Boone was gay at all. Shannon could of joked, also maybe the joke is on us, there is no gay character, but it could be Tom.

with all the stuff going on , the others , monster thingy , Desmond trying to keep Charlie alive , Jin and Sun expecting etc.... WHY would they need any filler characters ever ????

they are long gone because if they wake up they have no chance of breathing inder all that sand it will suficate them

In the most recent podcast dated 4/16 D&C confirm that Nikki and Paulo are dead, buried alive.

The whole deal with Nikki and Paulo was the writers/producers effort to respond to viewer questions about the background losties.
So they introduced N and P. But the viewers hated them. Expose was a great episode IMO. It was funny and entertaining. It also gave a different viewpoint. A look back at missed characters. My only complaint is I would have rather seen Nikki dive in to the waterfall lagoon to look for the diamonds.
