But why would you destroy the communication to the outside world. Dharma needed it for things, food drops, to get out, or off. Even in a takeover, if we assume the Hostiles live on the island, who would they call. Eventually Dharma could take it back and resume communications, why destroy t at all.

Seriously it's just common practice in any war-type scenario that if there is something of great importance you must always destroy it as a last resort rather than let it fall into enemy hands. It's absolutely logical.

It reminds me of Stargate SG1, whenever Stargate Command is compromised, the person in charge will immediately start a self destruct countdown to destroy the base to stop it falling into enemy hands.

DHARMA knew that the hostiles might try and take the facility, they also knew it was extremely important (possibly the only communcation with the outside world) so they set C4 to destroy it should it fall into enemy hands. "Has the station been taken over by Hostiles?" If yes then "BOOM". There was even a timer long enough to allow escape from the building. Makes perfect sense.

If DHARMA had wired the explosives, why not build them into the station itself, like they did with the first hatch? The key that overrided everything was buried under the station, and there must have been explosives.

The Hostiles and DHARMA may have been fighting for some time, but DHARMA must have had quite a bit of time before that started, to build all the stations. They drove around in unarmored vw buses, not armored carriers.

And if they were worried about the hostiles, why bury the command in a chess game? You could build a hidden self destruct button pretty much anywhere.

Also this wasn't the only possible communication device, there was a radio tower according to the French Woman.

And I again, why protect communications from the Hostiles, I really don't believe they want much contact with the outside world. I do see the importance of a self destruct, but I think it wasn't meant for the hostiles, perhaps it's this other group we all speculate about.

I think I am getting confused on what "groups" there are on the island and who are who... Maybe I am just thinking too hard though!

I think the whole thing was a setup.

Since Par Avion episode we now know that John went in to the basement part and took some C4 so he lied when he said he didn't know about it, but I still think he didn't know enter 77 would blow the place up.
I agree with everyone that said the C4 was added long after the Flame station was originaly built. And I thought it was odd or noteworthy that there were wires hanging down from the ceiling to the chess computer. these wires looked like the same wires running to the C4.

Thought I would add my thoughts on the C4.

The wiring was way too haphazard and untidy to have been installed with the original construction. Had to have been added after the fact, and fairly recently as in a couple of years, or maybe even less. The brick in Locke's bag looked to be in near pristine condition to have been hanging in a basement on a humid jungle island for any amount of time.

Many times batch numbers and manufacturing dates are printed on labels of all sorts, including C4.

In one of the other threads I was reminded that Sayid was in Sydney to infiltrate a terrorist cell that had C4. Would someone be able to do a screen capture on some close-ups of the C4 in their respective episodes in order to determine if the C4 could be from the same lot?

This was all I could find on the C-4 for either episode... The one with Sayid (Solitary) did not have any screen caps of the C-4 that I could find... Hope this will help some =)

Hey, thanks for the effort. Just seems that there are few if any genuine coincidences. C4 is too common an uncommon commodity to dismiss when it is addressed in two entirely different scenarios.

Just a thought...........
