The Cat

Did anyone else notice that the cats name in the flame is Nadia... Patchy said it was after a gymnist Nadia something and that is also the name of the woman that Sayid helped escape in Iraq & John Locke inspected her house in CA...

I thought about the name connection immediately with the cat. Of course the appearance of the cat also had a special connection as we found out. So, is it coincidence, or another tool of manipulation used by the others? It seems to me, that there is no true coincidence on this show....just a series of orchestrated connections. The cat would trigger a desire to show mercy in Sayid, it would also be a distraction. That distraction almost got him killed when he first approached the house.

I also read on another site that Nadia (the gymnast) in real life after winning the gold medal changed gyms and joined a gym called The Flame.

I was thinking, could Sayid seeing the cat at the end of the episode have been Smokey? Kinda like how Kate saw the black horse when she was nursing Sawyer back to health from when he was shot on the raft...

The writers said there was a time when we saw the smoke monster in season 2 that no one knew it was that... Just a thought

Great call up there Froggie, I mean, they had a file on Jack, and now they are playing mind games with Sayid on the fly. Awesome.

The wierd thing is, Kate pet (petted? no, that's not right) the horse, so it must have felt real. I have no doubt that it was smokey, but to FEEL real, then there is really no boundries that he(smokey) cannot cross.

Am I mistaken? The first time she see's it is when she is freaking out... Then later Sawyer and her go out of the hatch when he wakes up cause he doesn't believe they aren't rescued when he wakes up in the hatch... They go out side she see's the horse and Sawyer says something like Freckles I think maybe you better take me back inside... They lock eyes she says you can see it... Thats when she walks over to it... Of course this is all from my memory so I could be mistaken

Sawyer definitely saw the horse. I don't if 'Smokey' The Monster can actually transform into other object, solid objects, like you're describing. I think at most he has a sort of psychological effect on people to draw them in .. Eko's hallucinations were probably his own doing mostly but the monster kinda triggered them. Something like, he uses people's weak points (perhaps by making them recall their past?) to lure them in.

I know it's kinda unrelated but why did the monster not kill Echo the first time he met him but did the second?

There is really no good reason, my theories:

- something to do with Eko's state of mind in each case. Maybe because he was more calm/resigned to the experience the first time, and more aggressive the second. His point of view right before he died seems to me to be a bit more selfish than it was when he still thought of himself as just a priest.

- that Smokey has several "handlers" and that they direct what it does and where it goes...and that Eko's threat to these individuals was increasing so he was taken out. When I suggested to my wife that the handler who spared him was Walt, she thought I might be onto something. Or on something...

- that the energy he was exposed to in the Hatch explosion somehow made him appear in a different light, so to speak...marked him for death in a way that we can't understand yet.

- or Smokey was just having a bad day and took it out on the people that were closest to it.
