Kate Austen

Kate Austen is one of the middle section survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Kate is a fugitive, and was being pursued by Marshal Mars prior to the flight, for blowing up her father. Kate had been captured in Australia and was being escorted back to the United States before the crash. Kate has always seemed to run away from her past. Even on the Island, Kate exhibits a kind of evasive behavior to escape from her problems. Kate, when on the run, always had good intentions and never did any outright harm or killings to anybody, she believed she was doing things for the greater benefit of others. This view is prominently connected with her actions of her father's murder - she believed she was relieving her mother from his abusive presence. Kate is strong-willed, useful and clever, but dislikes being alone and is usually level-headed.

She has escaped from the captivity of the Others with Sawyer, and has formed an ambiguous romantic relationship with him, despite still being unsure about her feelings for Jack.

Default The Chess Game

The first time Loche plays chess against the computer he is checkmated by a move which can't be checkmate. Though you can't see the whole board, the place where the enemy queen moves to does not threaten Locke's king, and it moves from a position that cannot reveal any other enemy pieces to threaten Locke's king. therefore it isn't checkmate.

The second time when Locke wins, the whole board is visible, and the "checkmate" Locke receives is far from checkmate. There are two moves the computer can do to escape from check.

Also note that different cuts show different chessboards, and that Locke's first move in the second game is extremely illogical, followed by an extremely illogical move by the computer.

In short whoever wrote that portion had next to ZERO knowledge of how to play chess.

Im betting the "Chess game" was no such thing; it was an Enigma-type message coding machine...

Mikael was telling the truth about the game's cheating?

Obviously it was not a standard chess game program. Possibly what the cheating computer reference was about. I didn't pay much attention the the computer screen game details, because I knew that Locke would be allowed to win at some point and that it was a setup.

Total set up. Locke was no doubt a gamesman, Risk and Backgammon was already in his arsenal, but to beat a game designed by three cheating russian grand masters, if Mikail wasn't lying then, well, that would be hard. Mikail wanted him to play so he could be distracted, someone else let him win, that's why we saw such horrible gameplay.

The move that the machine made to give Locke a checkmate was so stupid, it HAD to have been done by someone looking on. Someone wanted Locke to get to Candles message.

I have no Klugh as to who or why.

Did anybody notice in the video that popped up after Locke beat the chess game, there was a bookshelf of manuals behind him? Then when Sayid goes into the secret chamber where klugh is, he finds a very similar looking bookshelf? I wonder if the place where klugh was hiding WAS the actual flame hatch, and the house on top was something built later. I remember Sayid looking at 2 of the manuals, one was protocol for a food drop and the other was a Dharma training manual, with all of this info I could see how the "hostiles" could easily take over this station/hatch and act like they were still Dharma.
