Desmond David Hume
Desmond David Hume was the lone resident of the Swan at the time of the Flight 815 crash. He was discovered by Locke, Kate and Jack a month later after they had blown open Hatch. After his failed attempts to leave the Island, Desmond joined the camp of survivors. Following the destruction of the Swan, Desmond gained a mysterious ability to see flashes of the future, with which he predicted Charlie's imminent death.

If you think about it...our 815ers are a pretty hostile group themselves...

I agree with most of the above...we have to conclude that the chess game is just a cute password device overtop of the computer's real use, and that the intended users would know the chess moves that gets you in.
So, somehow Locke hit on the password by luck, or the computer can be manipulated from elsewhere by someone watching on the cam, and they let him in. And I think that's what was going on.
Now consider this: did Mikael know how to get in and use those commands? Cause if he did, and he could order food drops, then HE might well have caused the S2 Lockedown event...and you have to assume he can read the ops manuals in the basement, like the one on food drops Sayid found.
So...if Benry didnt enter the Swan no's..., then there's SOMEBODY ELSE who did!!! Maybe the same somebody who was watching Locke playing chess...and that means there's another faction out there, which opposes Ben/Mikael et al...in my imagination there's still a small holdout of Dharmans somewhere, they've lost control of their hatches to the Others, but they're still out there...
And the game goes on...

2.Why would you have to play a chess game designed by 3 grand masters (and that cheats) if you are under attack - isn't sitting down and concentrating the last thing that you would want to do?
3.Why did Mikhail let John play? Shouldn't he have said get away from that computer you don't know what it could do? or Hey! get out of this room? Mikhail seemed a little to casual about letting this stranger just come in his house and look around and mess around with stuff.
4. Why did Locke push 77 if there was no danger? Enter 77 if the hostiles are there - nobody was there but some cows and Mikhail, an armed Kate and Sayid and John could handle one guy.

1. WOW! I never seen Marvin having a fake arm before, thanks for the info.Wednighter.. do you have Windows Picture and Fax Viewer? .. you can zoom in and co.
2. Since lock is so vain (lol) and said he has played alot of computer games and is sure they don't know how to cheat so i guess he was keen to beat them.
3. To make him believe he is from the DHARMA.
4. In total agreement with OLNUMBA7 .. because they were in the place now and then , in the heat of the moment and if he didn't press 77 it would seem strange so I think it was instinct.

The writers were not messed up on this one, it was intentional. They wanted us to see that the game blatantly did not function properly. Locke should have noticed it too, but he was too entranced by it all to think about it. I believe it was a time based program. The chess program was known by the hatch residents not to be a real game, but a prompt for a self destruct mode. The programmers/residents of hatch did not play the game because they knew it was not real. Once it began to be played, a count down began in the program. After so much time of being played it would offer the phoney checkmates and then the prompts.
This would give the captive residents time to reclaim the hatch before the self destruct mode kicked in. I do not believe that there was someone watching them on camera and then detonated at the right time. This program was designed in case there was no one around to stop the hatch from being taken. Self sufficient, no human necessary.
