Paulo

Paulo was one of the middle section survivors of Flight 815. Before the crash, he and Nikki Fernandez murdered Howard L. Zukerman and stole his diamonds. They spent most of their time on the island searching for these diamonds to the exclusion of almost everything else. A bite from a Medusa spider induced a death-like paralysis in Paulo. He subsequently died as a result of being buried alive while paralized.

Default Mama Cass's song

Someone commented on a hidden meaning in the use of the Three Dog Night song in the episode Tricia Tanaka is dead.

When I was watching the watch lady explaining to Desmond how things were supposed to be (in the store, when she first tells him he's not supposed to buy the ring) as she ticks off the plot-points of his coming life, I kept thinking of the second verse of Mama Cass's song which go:

You're gonna be nowhere,
loneliest kind of lonely...

It was almost like the song was foretelling his time, alone, on the island.

added later: The song also sort of sums up Desmond's life. He (in his flashbacks) always seems to be giving up what he wants (make his own kind of music) because he is influenced by all the outside influences telling him what he "should" do and how he "should" act.

When he reawakens on the island and asks to be sent back again, it was like he was saying, "I won't be fooled again, this time. Please. Let me go back and I'll do it right this time." Like it had been some sort of a test and he failed it again.

I can see what your saying here... It did seem like when he woke up and realized he was back on the island that he failed some test & that this time if he could go back he would do things right... I also noticed that he said in the bar the second time before he gets knocked out he tells the bartender "I'm celebrating, I think I just made the biggest mistake of my like, and I'm pretty sure its not the first time" or something like that... Very much did seem as if he had done it before

And just before he got clocked by the guy with the cricket bat, he was saying, "I was right! I can change things!"

But, by then, it was too late.

He had already let himself be convinced to do the "wrong" thing (lose the love of his life). And he wasn't given enough time to go back and tell her it was a mistake. He gets hit with the bat, and his chance to change the way his life turned out is over--just as he realizes that he could have changed things if he had only believed in himself (and his convictions).

Just thought of something else.

In Season 2's last episode, I wondered why Desmond quietly went along with Locke when he proposed they stop the button from being pushed.

He KNEW what would happen when the button wasn't pushed, but he quietly followed Locke's lead without bringing it up.

Until it was almost too late.

I think Desmond would rather follow than lead. I think he somehow believes that if a different person seems totally convinced of their position, then he must be wrong and they must have some priviledged information he doesn't know about.

I think, when push comes to shove, Desmond does not have the courage of his convictions. And that is the real reason why he freaks out whenever someone calls him a coward.

I don't know... I don't really think that Desmond had known before he turned they key... I think that some effect of turning the key is why he remembered the past the way he did and know bit of the future now... I noticed how if he was in London he remembered bits from on the island... Now on the island he remembers bit from on the island that have not currently happend yet... Something happened when he turned the key is why he knows what is going to happen in the future now....

Um, he knew about what happened immediately after the time runs out and the numbers haven't been entered.

Remember, after he accidentally killed Kelvin, when he got back to the Hatch the loudspeaker was announcing, "System Failure...System Failure..." and everything that was metal was starting to fly across the room.

So, he had to have known what would happen if Locke didn't enter the numbers, but he didn't tell him, didn't warn him, until he realized that Locke was not going to figure out what he already knew.

Of course, if he had told Locke, then he wouldn't have had to use the key, the Hatch wouldn't have blown up, and we would have a whole different show right now.

Yes he knew that part- but then when 815 crashed he did push the numbers before the "implosion". I don't think he knew the "time travel" part though.

Yea I forgot about that, your right.... I think that this also had to do with Desmond "giving up" Locke told him about the pearl station and that it was not real... He didn't put the day when Kelvin died together with the day the plane crashed until they were already in the hatch and he started telling Locke that they had to push the button and Locke throws the computer on the ground breaking it... That is when Desmond says "you've killed us all brotha"

Yep. And he believed Locke over his own knowledge of what happened when he missed the 108 minute deadline until he "re-confirmed" his inner knowledge with the printout.

Just like when he let himself be persuaded by his physicist friend that he couldn't be remembering the future and by the lady in the shop who was telling him that even if he did "remember" the future, it couldn't be changed.

Same thing.

Like Mama Cass says,
It may be rough-going,
Just to do your thing
the hardest thing to do.

It was easier for Desmond to fall in and follow than to find the courage within himself to strike out on his own.
