Desmond David Hume
Desmond David Hume was the lone resident of the Swan at the time of the Flight 815 crash. He was discovered by Locke, Kate and Jack a month later after they had blown open Hatch. After his failed attempts to leave the Island, Desmond joined the camp of survivors. Following the destruction of the Swan, Desmond gained a mysterious ability to see flashes of the future, with which he predicted Charlie's imminent death.

That whole room scene kind of reminded me of Clockwork Orange.

Indeed, that's who I meant.

As this would be a form of brainwashing to try to conform people/deviants to certain societal (is that a word?) ideals, perhaps the others are trying to live in the Utopia that the Hanso Foundation wants(ed) to achieve. Another reason to only take the children as they can be molded much more easily into a belief system. Old Smokey could be another tool created to conform people to certain standards, being able to "see" into people's minds, determine their potential for "change". Ole Smokey didn't kill Mr. Eko at first because he seemed remorseful about his violent past. But as soon as he was able to shed his guilt, blam-o he is now a free thinker and a threat.

Yeah i dont like that smoke monster, he makes the island seem less realistic... i mean the whole thing is pretty far fetched, but if you think about it, all this could actually happen, but the smoke monster makes it seem fantasy now, and its a little dissipointing.

"Aim small miss small"
Me, well, I'm a man of faith. Do you really think all this...is an accident? That we, a group of strangers survived, many of us with just superficial injuries? Do you think we crashed on this place by coincidence, especially this place? We were brought here for a purpose, for a reason, all of us. Each one of us was brought here for a reason.

The smoke monster could be something more realistic and possible. The first thing i thought of when i saw it was nanoparticles, those little tiny machines that aren't a threat alone but once they get into a group, watch out. Maybe that was part of the Dahrma experiment somehow... or maybe a part of the experiment gone wrong...
