Desmond David Hume

Desmond David Hume was the lone resident of the Swan at the time of the Flight 815 crash. He was discovered by Locke, Kate and Jack a month later after they had blown open Hatch. Fate/destiny seem to play a big part in the way things have transpired on The Island (for example, Locke 'saving' Desmond's life, so that Desmond could later save Locke's life).

That said, there definitely seems to be a prominent spiritual (if not religious) side to The Island, like when that girl in the airport said to Eko that when she was "between places" (since she apparently died and returned to life the next morning) Yemmi told her that Eko would see him again, and Eko later discovered Yemmi in the wreckage if the same plane that took off from Nigeria.

What's the most compelling fate/destiny element in LOST...? The entire show is premised on a plane crash, in which certain people survived...right? Surviving a crash is to a certain extent 'luck'...where you are seated, how the plane impacts etc.

How do you pre-determine your own fate in a crash...you cant! Even if you choose your own seat you cant be certain the plane wont explode, or hit a mountain...whatever. This is the central theme of this show.

Locke says they're here to fulfil some purpose...Jack says nonsense.
Juliet says there's no free will...Benry says it's God's will that Jack fell from the sky.

If he's right, God does airline seat selection. Juliet is sure he's wrong...maybe sure enough that to PROVE him wrong, she'll get Jack to kill him, (that's why HE must do it, not her) in other words to tell God and his 'will' to go shove it! Her mantra is: Free will shall prevail!

Ben, to Locke: God doesn't know how long we've been here, John. He can't see this island any better than the rest of the world.

This is something Ben said to Locke, when he was still being held captive. I thought it might be worth mentioning, since it seems relevant.
