Dr. Jack Shephard
Dr. Jack Shephard is often seen as the main character of the series. He is a spinal surgeon and the de facto leader of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Jack has control issues and trouble dealing with situations that he cannot fix. However, this attitude of solving problems through reason has given him the ability to function well in crisis. Sometimes, if he feels guilt or pain over a situation he can't fix himself, he will do anything he can to fix it, even borderlining on obsessive. Jack is, most of the time, in control of his life, emotions and situation he is in and is able to keep a cool head in tense situations. Jack is also the half brother of Claire Littleton, although neither of them is aware of this. Jack has formed very strong bonds with Kate and Juliet while he has been on the Island.

OK, the thing is if you've seen enhanced views of the Blast Door Map from "Lockdown", you might have noticed the latin "Ursus Maritimus" in the bottom right corner near where it locates "Zoological Research" (ie. where Kate and Sawyer and Jack are). It also says "stated goal accelerated deterritorialization of Ursus Maritimus".
The polar bears may look normal on the outside, but have been engineering/conditioned to behave differently than they would in their natural environment. This may well include hibernating, seeking shelter, and perhaps more aggressive behaviour.
It is also possible, imho, that the Others we've seen so far have undergone some similar process to make them stealthier, more aggressive, more intelligent...and who knows what else.

Yes they do both. At least females do. They dig out snow caves and 'hibernate' while their young grow. They don't have a drop in body temperature and heart rate like true hybernating bears, but they don't leave until their cubs are old enough, and even then will return to the den on occasion. Enough national geographic stuff though. I'm sure these bears aren't normal polar bears, but it's something to keep in mind that it's not totally out of their range of natural behaviors in their natural habitat. On a tropical island though...I don't doubt that they are a bit confused.
Maybe the caves are just cooler and with all of that fur and humidity who wouldn't long for a dark damp cave to cool off in.
