Now that you mention it, I think there is significance to that statement... my only theory would be that Locke found a ROOSTER laying eggs and killed it because he considered it an "abomination" . He smells the eggs because hes unsure and he feeds them to Ben to see his reaction. Remember Juliet impregnated a male field mouse? Could have been another one of her experiments...just an idea..
