I think you are probably right about the "deal" of secrecy about the island. Jack says he is sick of having to lie all the time. Some intervening events with the "rescue" crew are bound to be involved.
As far as Jack's being a "hero" are concerned, this is strictly related to rescuing the two from the car wreck. The most glaring thing about the whole Jack flash forward is the TOTAL absence of reference to the Oceanic crash, the island, and the rescue--except that Jack says: "Do you have any idea what I have been through."
Apparently none of this is known publicly. It's a MUCH bigger deal than the car rescue, but no one mentions it.

So the Spirit of Christmas Future asks Scrooge. This episode is called "Through A Looking Glass"...not THE but A. There have been a number of references to Dickens, and also to Lewis Carroll.

Quoting myself... But I forgot to mention. In reference to the Scrooge reference. Through A Looking Glass takes place on or about Christmas Eve (according to
Lostpedia it is Dec. 23 or Christmas eve eve.), though no one explicitly mentions Christmas at all.
Incidentally, the Indian Ocean Tsunami is going to occur in three days on 12/26/2004. I wonder if this will be worked in somehow. Increased number of ships in the Pacific, for example.

I think it may be only ONE possible future. Perhaps starting next season we will be having flash forwards for each character instead of flashbacks. Or else we see the after the island life of each character and the flashbacks are to their past on the island.
Given Desmond's experience and his interaction with Charlie, perhaps the remaining episodes are about how the final future is shaped by their actions before leaving the island.

I have been informed that I am in error about the "A" in the title. This is the what iTunes has for the title, which is what I watched. Too bad, I think it was a good clue. Anyway, I'll stick with the rest for the moment.
