According to IMDb info for Clancy Brown, who played the Kelvin role, his character name in the earlier flashback appearances was Joe Inman, not Kelvin Inman. So we don't know if he went by a different first name in the military, if Kelvin has a twin named Joe and both were in the military but not together in Iraq, or if the writers just decided to give the character a more unique first name for the sake of fans remembering it.

Perhaps the Dharma Initiative had become like a cult by the time Joe Inman joined up and they encouraged their new members to take on, um, what's the religion? Hindu, Buddism, type names. Like the bunch out in Waco, Texas...David Koresh's group. They all took on Old Testament first names when they joined his Branch Davidian sect.

Maybe this is sort of the same thing.

I think the writers are trying to drive us crazy with all these near misses.
Sayid and Kelvin is a great example. Just like Desmond came sailing in on
the boat Libby gave him (come on, who would just give away a boat and
why don't I ever run into these people?) just as they were putting her
body in the ground.
