If he did just make all this up to anger the Losties into action, 1) why kill one the best shooters/fighters/hotheads that would've been an asset on a battlefield, but 2) that could explain his expression while this was all going on. He was surprised that he could actually shoot AL, and Libby and was not looking forward to shooting himself.

Somehow, when it comes to Walt, I don't think Michael is the sharpest tool in the box.

Remember, when he took off from the tailies, he just went off with no idea of where to look. For all he knew, the "Others" on that side of the island had never heard of Walt and would kill hmi if they caught him.
