If the mission was to get Henrimposter out.. would he not have just used the gun to get them outta dodge? No.. I think that Michael is being used by the others because they say they will give him back if he does what they tell them.

Way before he started popping holes in people, I thought Mike was acting weird. It was specifically the moment when he woke up and started telling his story to Jack. He's talking about the others' camp and where he believed the kids were being held and then he stutters and hesitates, and then he says, "I couldn't save him." He was talking about Walt. Right there, was when I thought to myself, that was weird, the way he said that, and his eyes shifting...

I think there is more going on then just Mike doing this to get walt back. Mike has been let in on the master plan, and now he is party to it.

At least Foster and her had a go at it before she died. He lost his gun, but it's a good trade off
