Default A Lava field?

Now, I know that islands are formed by volcanos, I'm not quite that stupid.

But when someone asked Bernard where they were going to get so many black rocks (Hmmm... black rocks...) and he replied that there was a lava field nearby, that kind of jumped out at me.

I dunno... perhaps I've missed it somewhere along the line, but I've never noticed anything about a lava field before.

And that brings up another question... if they are on a volcanic island (which would explain why the foliage is so thick), then is the volcano active? Could they be in danger from it?

Also... Maybe Dharma picked this island because of both the magnetic qualities and the fact that there has been volcanic activity.

Any thoughts?

Since the rocks Bernard wanted hauled in were small enough to carry and appeared somewhat smooth-edged, the lava field was obviously very old and weathered. So one could conclude that the volcano has been inactive for perhaps millennia.

Alternatively to your maybe...Perhaps the Dharma project created the magnetic qualities as a trial run on controlling large geological events such as volcano eruption and earthquakes. Maybe entering the numbers triggers the unseen device/workings to recalibrate itself to maintain control of variations in the geology deep within the earth, so if the numbers aren't entered the control becomes increasingly ineffective? Just some thoughts, keying off yours...

I didnt even notice this , how stupid of me. well are islands only formed by volcanic activitiy? Some are there from ages ago when there were valleys on the land and then water slowly came over it and then went down and left only a partial part of the land there, but i like this theory and that makes me think about that ? being a volcano. And if its a volcano wouldnt that be strange if teh heads of teh Dharma group are within ... lol that would be cool ,. like a hatch inside.

Me, well, I'm a man of faith. Do you really think all this...is an accident? That we, a group of strangers survived, many of us with just superficial injuries? Do you think we crashed on this place by coincidence, especially this place? We were brought here for a purpose, for a reason, all of us. Each one of us was brought here for a reason.

SouthernCelt, I like your idea of the numbers being in relation to the control of a volcano. Very interesting.

And it would be funny if Dharma HQ was inside. It reminds me of Dr. Evil's Volcano Lair. And when I thought about it, I did think that the big '?' in the middle of the map might be the volcano.
