I think that Dave said "See you in the other life" reffering to the real world at the Santa Rosa hospitle that Hurley stayed at.

So here's an idea I haven't seen mentioned yet... what if Dave was "sort-of" real? I mean, what if he was a Dharma creation? Do you think Dharma could have somehow "planted" Dave in Hurley's mind?

I remember thinking the same thing. "We've heard that before!" It was like a chill ran down my spine.
I think it is very posible that Dharma inplanted Dave in Hurley's head. It's as simple as hypnosis. I would say Dhrama is more than capable of doing that.

At this point I tend to think that Dave was a creation of Hurley's subconscious as a result of his trying to deal with his food problem. Once they got to the island, though, Dave may have been manifested as reality the same way the polar bear and other out-of-place things have appeared. So one way of putting it would be to say that the island brings "dreams" to reality.

I think you're all giving Dharma 'way too much power and influence.

What if Dharma is the failed brainchild the same as Marlon Brando's attempt to create the ecologicall pure Tahitian experience when he purchased that island after the remake of Mutiny on the Bounty?

As I recall, Brando just left a caretaker and crew to keep the place up after it failed to attract clientele and he lost interest, finally closing it down almost ten years after it last paying guest had camped out in one of the huts.

Could the same thing have happened here? The Hanso Foundation just focused its resources and money elsewhere. which would explain why eveything connected with Dharma is obsolete and delapidated.

Oh...and the "See you in another life" line is, I think, just a ploy of the writers to use a catchphrase to hook the viewers attention--sort of like, "Be seeing you," from the old Prisoner TV show starring Patrick MaGoohan.
