Dr. Jack Shephard

Dr. Jack Shephard is often seen as the main character of the series. He is a spinal surgeon and the de facto leader of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Jack has control issues and trouble dealing with situations that he cannot fix. However, this attitude of solving problems through reason has given him the ability to function well in crisis. Sometimes, if he feels guilt or pain over a situation he can't fix himself, he will do anything he can to fix it, even borderlining on obsessive. Jack is, most of the time, in control of his life, emotions and situation he is in and is able to keep a cool head in tense situations. Jack is also the half brother of Claire Littleton, although neither of them is aware of this. Jack has formed very strong bonds with Kate and Juliet while he has been on the Island.

Oh, yes that makes sense. He may have done something crazy right after
she dumped him. He's probably realized that he is better off since she
would have obsessed and gotten mad everytime he worried about someone
other than her or even thought about one of his own problems.

I say the thugs came back and beat the hell out of him, putting him in a wheelchair.

Personally, I think we haven't gotten all of Locke's story...yet.

Remember, in the first flashbacks (at the Box Factory) he looked like he does now (hairstyle, demeanor).

In the episode "Walkabout," when they are attacked by the boar, and Kate asks Locke if he's okay, he says something like, "Helen? Are you all right?"

I think that the part we haven't been told yet goes something like this (if I was the one writing it):

Locke wins Helen back. Maybe by telling her that he was helping his father to get him out of his life. Remember, he didn't take the money. He ran out of the motel room after Helen, and I think the guilty looks his Dad gave him as he left was because Daddy didn't leave any of the money behind. Daddy was a con man.

Anyway, back to the backstory. They (Helen and Locke) reconcile. Then there is a car accident in which she is killed and Locke paralysed (maybe we can see that "golden" car again). Locke was probably driving, so he feels guilty that he survived. To get rid of the guilt, he starts thinking about his "destiny." He was spared in order to do something... something big.

After he got his legs back on the island, he acts with an almost religious fervor, perhaps because he views his recovery as a "sign."

Oh, and remember the the exclamation, "It wasn't supposed to happen this way!", when he was arguing with Jack in the Hatch?

I think Locke has had his vision of his destiny shaken and for most of this season has been a lot more uncertain than he was in the first season. Not sure of the path he is to take.

So, those are my thoughts on this.
You guys can go back to what you were doing.

I'm not sure if this question belongs here or not , but , in a previous episode one of his legs was hurt badly yet he did not seem to feel it , but this time he definately feels the pain and also that time with Boone , when his legs were giving out on him ... and he couldn't climb into the plane himself . I was just wondering how the use of his legs really play into all this .

Charlie 98210, I think that's a great theory^. I never thought of that before, but it makes great sense.

Locke hinted that the island took away his legs to save him (like it knew that climbing into the plane would mean his death). You might recall that Locke's legs first became numb, and then his ability to walk got worse the closer he and Boone got to the plane. He already had the vision (dream) of Boone covered in blood. He yelled at Boone to stay out of the front of the plane. He also lost his ability to know which direction he was travelling (he started using a compass, as Boone helped him to walk).

Now, I don't want to get all metaphysical here, but the way the plot played out, it did seem that the island wanted the plane found, but it didn't want Locke to put himself in danger (plus, it stopped him from continuing to try to break open the Hatch).

Now there's an idea.

Perhaps this is where Locke's vision of his destiny began to divurge from the island's vision. Locke was fixated on opening the hatch. It would give them all the answers. But the dream of the plane had no references to the hatch. It was almost like a diversion to get Locke to leave that hatch alone.

I'm sort of rambling, but does this explanation help?

That totally makes sense, I never thought it through to that conclusion, especially the part about the Island (or whatever ) stopping him from going into the plane to save him , I must admit I am not a fan of Locke and for some reason look the other direction concerning him . Sort of like he is the catalyst for a lot of the bad things that happen as well as the good . You know the black and white , good and evil thing , Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde ... , anyway , Thanks , and I will try to be more open minded when it comes to Locke ....

Well, another thing to keep in mind about Locke: He said to Sayidd that the reason he hit him and destroyed the transceiver (when he took Sayidd to the plane) was that he would do anything he felt was necessary for the good of the group.

Think about that. Anything. And he (Locke) is the one who decides.

And he likes to have secrets and one-up Jack.
