At the beginning of the second season, Jack and Locke meet Desmond who says that he was participating in a race around the world which was in a hot air balloon! That has to be Desmond's baloon!

I just rewatched that episode...i don't think you even hear him say what he'll be traveling in. I listened spefically for ballon, and didn't hear that. But i'm pretty sure he doesn't say a sailboat either. Just a thought.

He says sailboat when him and Jack meet at the stadium before Jack operates on his future wife. He tells Jack he is training. But why do we even think that he may have been telling the truth. I don't think Desmond was training for nothing at all except to see how Jack would perform with a little manipulation, and Jack did well, he performed a miracle. I think if we look into all the peoples flashbacks they are coersed (I think that is how you spell it) by someone into doing something they don't want to or they don't think is possible. Hense the human experiment on behavioral patterns.

Steve Fossett, who in 2002 manned the first succesful solo round-the-world balloon flight. The balloon was called the "Solo Spirit" and is described this way:
"The Solo Spirit balloon uses a combination of helium and hot air to fly, a design known as a Roziere balloon. The balloon envelope is 140 feet tall and 60 feet wide. It contains 550,000 cubic feet of helium plus 100,000 cubic feet of hot air."
