Even if they couldn't get a perfect water tight seal from the outside, wouldn't the closed door give them enough time to get into the scuba gear and swim away? Especially if the door swung into the control room, this would be a good thing right? The pressure of the water pouring in would keep the door closed.... right?

exactly. Plus Charlie and Des had no idea how long between 'flipping the switch' and the room 'filling with water'. Fall all they knew the switch was tied to the flood... and they should the scuba outfits set beforehand. I flinched with the audacity of this [scripted] error on there parts.
