yeah I agree with those who think Charlie should have just ran out and closed the door behind him. I would have rather seen him swim out and get stuck or something and drown that way if he was gonna die. The way it happened didn't seem necessary. The only reason I can think of was that he was trying to save Desmond and prevent the rest of the station from flooding, but if thats the case then still he could have ran out of the room and then closed the door.

Nope, Charlie couldn't leave and close the door behind him. It has latching "dogs" which squeeze the door against the rubber gasket attached to the bulkhead (wall).
The door swung into the Communications Room, so it could only be locked and sealed from inside that room.
And the outer winder was only a little larger than Mikhail's head. Shoulders wouldn't fit through it.
Charlie was a goner once he latched that door shut.
(just as Desmond's vision had predicted: "I'm looking through a hatch into a room. It's full of gear. There's a flashing yellow light...")
