I think that when 815 crashed there was a possibility in their minds of their being Dharma spies on board, checking to see if the Hostiles had indeed taken over the Island. This might even be the case, do we know for sure the entire backstory of all the survivors? NOPE.

So...if they acted the hillbilly role before the Purge, they might just do it again, to ensure the Losties wouldn't become aware of their level of sophistication. Whatever they are hiding must be huge for them to go such lengths. I bet the answer is at
