Eko was not a mute. The first day the tailies were on the island he told the little boy not to worry about his sister, he asked to Cindy to watch the children because
he had to do something ( pull the bodies from the water) and then he told Bernard
he would pray for his wife and for the others on the plane. The first night he
killed the two "others" who tried to take him. MaYbe he felt a little guilty even
though Libby assured him it was in self defense.
When AL asked him why he waited 40 days to talk he answered " You waited
40 days to cry" Maybe it was a spiritual journey for him. Monks and nuns often
take temporary vows of silence for reflection and prayer or contrition.
