Default Out of the Blue

I'll be brave and post the first fanfiction here! This story has some slight AU(alternative universe). I will warn you, there is some language. Thanks guys!

Flames. Smoke. Kim was alone in a world of blood.

She opened her eyes. There was a man leaning over her.

“Don't move. You'll be OK.” He had a kind voice. She realized for the first time a splitting pain in her side. She tried to look at it.

“No, no, no, don't move. Sun, go to the caves. Get me another towel, and some more water.”

“Where am I?” Kim looked around and tried to get her bearings.

“I don't really know, and I've been here for over a month. I was on a plane going from Sydney to LA. The plane crashed and we've been here ever since. But you're in a tent on a beach, and I'm sewing up the nasty cut on your side.” The entire time he was talking he didn't stop working.

“We?” Kim looked puzzled.

“Myself and about forty-five other survivors. I was hoping you could tell me who you are and where you came from, though. You washed up on the shore about two hours ago. Kim struggled to remember the events of the past couple of hours. She had been on a plane. Then,

“Oh my God! The plane it, it crashed.” She tried to sit up. The man pushed her back down.

“Well that answers one of my questions, but not the other one. Who are you?” Someone entered the tent. A familiar voice spoke up.

“I think I can answer that question for you, Jack.” Kim tried to sit up again.

“Katie?”

“Katie? Well thats one I've never heard before. Do you guys know each other?” Kim looked up into her eyes. Yep, it was her.

“I guess you could say that.” Kim answered coldly. She wasn't sure how it was safe to react.

“Kim! I'm surprised at you. I expected a better reaction from my sister.” The man Jack looked up from his work. “What, you can't see the resemblance?” Jack had apparently finished what he was doing.

“Alright. You're finished. But you still haven't told me you're name.” Kate spoke up for her.

“Kim Ryan. Her name is Kim Ryan.” She looked at Kim as she said this, knowing she wouldn't protest to the last name. Technically it was her legal last name, even if she never used it. Jack stared at her suspiciously.

“You should be better in a couple of days. Until then you need to take it easy. It could come open again and I don't have any strong pain killers.” Kim started to stand up. Kate and Jack both rushed to help her. She laughed.

“I'm fine,” she stated, even though she winced as she said it. Jack made a move to leave.

“I'll go get you something to eat. And then you should rest. I'm sure you're exhausted.” He left the tent. The girls rushed into each others arms.

“Ryan? I can't believe you're using his name now.” Kate laughed.

“Oh come on. Is that all I'm going to get?”

“I missed you to, Annie.” Kim grinned at her. “Or are you going by Meg now?”

“Will you always give me a hard time, Liz?” She put emphasis on the last word. They could talk like this for hours, but both knew it was useless.

“You know, today is my birthday. I can't think of a better present. I get my big sister back.” Kim smiled at her sister.

“Wow! Now how old are you? Twenty-three?” Kim tried to punch her.

“No! Are you kidding me? I'm eighteen. Kieren's twenty-three.” There was a lull between them. Kim wished she hadn't brought up the subject of their brother.

“How is he? I mean, I heard he was following you.” Kate tried to look like she didn't really care, even though she did. Kim saw right through it.

“Bastard called the cops on me. That's why I was on the plane. He was there to. I don't think he made it.” Kate wasn't the least bit sorry to her that her brother was dead.

“Son of a ***** finally got what he deserved.” Kate was going to continue but Jack walked in with a handful of fruit and a water bottle.

“You can sleep here for the night. We'll find another place for you in the morning. Somebody should stay with you just in case.”

“I'll do it,” Kate volunteered, “I don't think I would sleep anyway.” Kim glanced gratefully at her. She didn't want to spend the night with a guy who didn't trust her. “Besides,” she looked at Kim, “I have a little explaining to do.” Kim could tell he still didn't trust her.

“Don't worry. I'm nothing like Kate.” She saw Kate hide a small smile. They both knew she had lied, but who wanted Jack to know that? He sighed and looked resigned to the fact that he wasn't going to find out more about her tonight. He glanced one more time at her and left. Kate went to the flap of the tent and looked out to make sure he wasn't listening. “Have you really been her over a month?” Kate walked back over to her and sat down.

“Yeah.” Kim looked slyly at Kate.

“That Jack guy, he's hot. You and him, you know.” Kate stared at her.

“He's a doctor, Kim. You know I have problems with doctors.” Kate's eyes clouded over, “I wouldn't risk getting involved with a doctor.”

“Sorry, I shouldn't have.” Kim's expression was genuine for the first time that night.

“Don't be. But there is this guy, his name's Sawyer,” Kim looked up suddenly, “he's the only person on this island who understands me.”

“Sawyer? What is he, some sort of con artist?” Kate laughed.

“How did you know?”

“I knew a Sawyer. He was in a plane crash, so I thought, maybe, you know. ” She trailed off into silence.

“Oh,” her face fell. “You heard Jack, you need to get rest. I'll see you in the morning.” Kate stood up and walked out of the tent.

“Katie?”

The first thing Kim saw when she woke up in the morning was a tarp. It took her a minute to readjust to her surroundings. As the events of the previous night replayed in her mind a small smile flickered across her face. She had found Kate. Kim stood up slowly. She pushed aside the flap of the tent and walked slowly down the beach toward the ocean. She just stood there, staring out at the ocean.

“You're so much like each other, you know,” a British man with a baby was walking towards her, “She stands here for hours, just staring at the ocean.”

“Who?”

“Kate. Anyone can tell you're related. Freckles, brown wavy hair, the way you brush the hair out of you're eyes, the way you squint in the sun. It's just like her.” Kim continued to stare at him. “My name's Charlie.” Kim seemed slightly taken back.

“Charlie? Charlie Pace?” He smiled slightly.

“Yeah. Why?” Kim laughed.

“Why? Charlie Pace. You play bass guitar in Driveshaft.” Charlie's grin spread from ear to ear.

“You like Driveshaft?”

“I guess. Kate listened to you guys all the time. She was obsessed. She had every song memorized. Didn't she tell you?” Charlie was puzzled. Kate had never shown any sign of being a Driveshaft fan.

“She really likes us that much? I mean, she never said anything.”

“Kate's a good actress. You should hear her do a British accent, “ Kim smiled, “Priceless.” She turned away from him and stared back out at the ocean. The baby in his arms started crying. She turned back to face him. “Here, let me help you.”

“I don't know if Claire would like it.” Kim was slightly taken back.

“Claire?”

“His mum. I'm not sure if she would be OK with it.” Kim was disappointed. “Sorry. Its just, I'm not his dad, so...” he trailed off.

“No. Its OK. I get it. I washed up on shore last night. Nobody trusts me.” She turned back around so Charlie wouldn't see how hurt she was. A young lady walked up and took the baby from Charlie. He looked back over at Kim. She was staring at something in the water. She turned around quickly. “There's someone out there.” Charlie came and stood next to her.

“Bloody hell, you're right.” Kim turned to him.

“You a good swimmer?” she asked.

“Well, I guess,” really he was a horrible swimmer, but she didn't need to find that out.

“Help me then.” She started off into the surf. Charlie glanced lovingly at Claire and headed into the water. It was slow going, but they finally made it out to the person. Kim gasped.

“What?” Charlie looked at her for an explanation, and little to his surprise he didn't receive one. The man was clinging on to a suitcase. They each grabbed one of his arms and swam towards the beach. A small group had gathered to watch them. As they got near the shore an Arab man waded into the water. He helped them pull him up on the sand away from the water. People around them started whispering things like, “Sawyer,” and, “Where are the others?” Kim held her head close to his body to see if he was breathing.

“Oh God.” Kim looked around, “Does anyone know CPR?” The Asian woman whom she remembered from the night before as Sun stepped forward.

“I do, but I'm too small. Someone needs to go to the caves and get Jack.”

“Caves?” Kim asked. The Arab man turned towards the jungle and broke into a run. Sun sat down on next to the man. Kim stared at his face.

“He's been shot.” Kim was startled out of her trip down memory lane by the sudden exclamation.

“Is it bad?” She was worried about him.

“I don't think so. It looks like it just grazed the skin.” They sat there for what felt like hours. Then Jack and the other man ran up. Jack pushed her out of the way.

“Sawyer. Sawyer, wake up.”

“He's not breathing.” He glared at Kim.

“I'm a doctor. Let me do this.” Kim stood up and left. She didn't want to be there when he woke up. She could just see the explosion. Suddenly she heard someone coughing and gasping for breath. Kim ran up the beach and into the tent she and Kate had stayed in last night. She pulled aside the flap. Kate was still asleep. “Kate. Kate, wake up.” Kim shook her gently.

“What?” Kim looked at her mysteriously.

“You'll never guess who just showed up.” Kate stood up and ran out of the tent and down the beach. Kim stared at her jog away. She knew questions would arise as to how she knew Sawyer, and she didn't know what sort of lie she would tell.
