We don't really believe there are Gorgons, or Hydras, or Minataurs, but it is as Folie stated, the three-blobbed smoke monster (named Cerberus) that guards the creepy island ["liberate te ex inferis" - save yourself from hell - courtesy of the blast door map] is similar to the three-headed dog named Cerberus that guards the entrance to Hades in Greek mythology.
