"“Not so much the smell, instead the fact that the Others could come back at any time."

And your point is?
80% of the Losties have already run into the "others". No one is scared of them anymore. They bleed just like them. They eat the same food they eat. They are not super humans with special powers. The Losties out number the "others" and have enough guns and ammo to take a stand.

It's real easy and not up for debate if this show intend on keeping it realistic. They must take a stand and go toe to toe. Give the others an option; either they start talking and make amends or take what they find and claim it because it’s clearly survival of the fittest scenario. There’s no politics in a jungle that can’t be found. In the jungle either you eat or get eaten!

In real life no individual would accept these situations and continue the status queue. At some point frustration kicks in and war is inevitable. This merry go round is getting pretty old and unbelievable. All the Losties pretty much know they can't leave with out the help of the others. Why do they continue avoiding them? This next episode Syid better get Juliet to talk if not I better see a bullet go through the middle of her forehead.
Juliet or any other “Other” serves them no good if they are not willing to cooperate. They are just another mouth to feed and a liability that can turn on them at anytime. If death is what you chose instead of cooperating then death is what you get. Case closed!
