Sawyer and Hurley are the only ones there when Nikki stumbled out of the jungle. Of course we know she said paralyzed, but neither Sawyer or Hurley understood what her last words were. Sawyer doesn't try that hard to figure out what she said. He is most likely just joking when he says plywood. Hurley on the other hand is trying to figure out what she actually said. At first he comes up with power lines. Then he blurts out Paulo lies cause he thinks he figured it out. It is a sudden realization for him and soon as it pops into his mind he yells it out. Just so happens he was wrong, just like he was wrong about Sawyer having anything to do with their apparent deaths.
