Um, he knew about what happened immediately after the time runs out and the numbers haven't been entered.
Remember, after he accidentally killed Kelvin, when he got back to the Hatch the loudspeaker was announcing, "System Failure...System Failure..." and everything that was metal was starting to fly across the room.
So, he had to have known what would happen if Locke didn't enter the numbers, but he didn't tell him, didn't warn him, until he realized that Locke was not going to figure out what he already knew.
Of course, if he had
told Locke, then he wouldn't have had to use the key, the Hatch wouldn't have blown up, and we would have a whole different show right now.
