I think Sawyer said Karl is a target, because he will now be looked for. Not only by the others but by Alex. He has too much heat on him and Sawyer and Kate needed to get back to their beach without the others or Alex following them. As I understood the others were going back to the main island at the end, not a third island. So they will be as close as they were in the first two seasons.
