So Penny Whitmore spent a fortune keeping a plane with sensitive equipment in the air waiting for an electromagnetic discharge.

So now it is clear to me that she got the information from the Physicist that Desmond talked to in the Pub. We were told that Desmond told him everything about the island all the way through pushing the button and turning the key.

This will open many more theories about Time Travel and Fate but one thing is for sure.
