Who says that Smokey would be at the funeral out of sentimentality?
If that is Smokey in the screenshots, it might just be scouting the group, checking them out etc.

Anyway, I think it's highly unlikely that the dark patch is Smokey, because as someone already mentioned it didn't move or make any noises. Very probably just shade.
