Haha, yeah it did take a while. Thanks for the comment.
Additional information -
108- Japanese - In Japan, at the end of the year, a bell is chimed 108 times to finish the old year and welcome the new one, with each ring representing one of 108 earthly temptations a person must defeat/subdue in order to achieve nirvana.
Similar to the way the countdown timer functioned - after inputting a code the timer began afresh - and similar to the Valenzetti Equation, in a way.
- Homer's Odyssey - In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus is forced to fight 108 suitors to return to his wife, Penelope. Penelope herself was the faithful wife of Odysseus, since she waited for him for 20 years while he was lost at sea. She resisted the advances of the aforementioned 108 suitors, who wished to marry her.
This is a remarkable connection, since Penelope is the love interest of Desmond, and Desmond is a sailor who was lost at sea, like Odysseus.
Also, Penelope was to marry someone else, but since the Portuguese scientists in the Listening Station (at the end of Live Together, Die Alone) refer to her as "Ms. Widmore", it is very probable that she did not marry, instead waiting for Desmond to one day return (just as Odysseus' wife did).
- Religion - 108 is believed to be sacred or otherwise significant by various Buddhist, Sikh, Jain and most commonly Hindu traditions.
108 is also, as mentioned, the number of "earthly temptations a person must defeat/subdue in order to achieve nirvana", as well as being the number of sins in Tibetan Buddhism.
The strong religious connections that 108 has runs parallel to the recurring theme of Religion in LOST, especially Buddhism ("Dharma").
Also 108 could be linked to 0108, Hebrew Strong's number, which constitutes to mist, vapor of the ground and when clouds are thus formed. This could be a far-fetched link to meteorology.
There are dozens more significances to the number 108 that could tie in with LOST, so I posted up some of the most interesting of those connections.
